The wait is finally over. Today, we are officially pulling back the curtain on Against The Mallet, a publication born from the dust of the arena, the sweat of the stable, and a vision to empower the female polo community.

The Vision: A Magazine for the Modern Horsewoman

When I founded El Lirio Polo, I wanted to create a team that prioritized the "Horse First" philosophy. As I transitioned from a thirty-year career in the international show world into the polo scene, I realized there was a missing piece in the media landscape. There were plenty of technical journals and high-society chronicles, but where was the magazine that spoke directly to the female player? Where was the guide that combined science-backed equine care with the high-end lifestyle we love?

Against The Mallet is the answer. It’s visionary, inspirational, and designed to elevate the sport. Inside each issue, you'll find everything from the history of our sport's pioneers to practical drills that will improve your game today.

Section 1: The Roots (Polo History Knowledge)

Polo is often called the "Sport of Kings," but history tells a much more inclusive story. In this section of the magazine, we dive deep into the origins of the game. Did you know that women have been part of the polo narrative since its ancient Persian beginnings? Historical accounts mention Princess Shirin, a skilled player of the 5th century.

In the modern era, the journey wasn't always easy. We celebrate legends like Sue Sally Hale, who in the 1950s and 60s had to disguise herself as a man: complete with a fake mustache: just to compete in USPA tournaments. It wasn't until 1972 that women were finally admitted as official members.

By understanding where we came from, we can better appreciate the ground we are breaking today. We cover the evolution of women's handicaps, the rise of the U.S. Open Women’s Polo Championship, and the international stars like Nina Clarkin and Hope Arellano who are redefining what is possible on the field.

Section 2: The Journey (Lily’s Choice & Personal Path)

In every edition of the magazine, I’ll be sharing a part of my own story. My transition from "show reins to polo reins" was a pivot that changed my life. After three decades in the show world, I found myself in a 10-day boot camp in Copenhagen during a -12°C winter. It was there, riding my pony Pichon 5, that I realized my future was on the polo field.

The magazine features an eight-part series chronicling this journey through Spain, Philadelphia, Wellington, New York, Kentucky, and Alabama. It’s a story of grit, learning to let go of old habits, and the sheer joy of finding a new passion later in my career. My hope is that by sharing my challenges and triumphs, I can inspire other equestrians to take that leap of faith into a new discipline.

Section 3: The Horse (Science-Backed Care & Product Reviews)

At El Lirio, our passion begins with the horse's wellbeing. In the "The Horse" section, we focus on our "Horse 1st" philosophy. We believe that greatness starts from the ground up, literally.

We don't just review products; we review what's actually on the shelves in our barn. If we use it on our string, we talk about it. This includes:

Whether it's the best breathable waterproof turnout sheet or a high-end moisturizer that survives a day in the Florida sun, if it’s in my gear bag, it’s in the magazine.

We also focus on "The Scout": our reviews of polo clubs and destinations around the world. From the manicured fields of Wellington to the historic grounds of Sotogrande, we give you the inside track on where to play, stay, and shop.

Section 5: -1 Fun (Polo & Riding Drills)

The name "-1 Fun" is a nod to my own handicap and the reality of the learning curve in this sport. This section is all about actionable advice for riders of all skill levels.

For beginners, we focus on the basics:

• One-Handed Riding: Drills to improve your balance and independent seat while holding the reins in your left hand.

• Swing Mechanics: Off-horse mallet exercises to build muscle memory before you ever hit a ball at a gallop.
